Westwood Permit Planning
Know What the Project Requires Before Work Begins
The Westwood Building Department administers the Massachusetts State Building Code and processes building, plumbing, gas, electrical, and related permits through the town's Viewpoint Cloud online portal. Projects involving structural changes, additions, kitchen or bathroom remodeling, attached deck construction, and siding replacement generally require review and a permit before work begins. Processing can take anywhere from one day up to 30 working days depending on project scope and current volume.
Not every home improvement project requires a building permit. One-story detached accessory structures under 200 square feet, fences not over six feet high, and certain detached decks under 200 square feet that sit less than 30 inches above grade are among the narrow exemptions. Properties subject to Westwood's Demolition Delay bylaw, Chapter 250A, specifically structures built on or before December 31, 1910, and contributing properties within the Colburn School and Fisher School Historic Districts, require Historical Commission review before demolition or major structural changes can proceed.

We manage the permit process on your behalf through Westwood's Viewpoint Cloud portal. If the scope of your project requires Historical Commission review under the Demolition Delay bylaw, or if the property falls within the Colburn School or Fisher School Historic Districts, we identify that during project planning so you know exactly which departments are involved and how long approval is expected to take before work begins.
